김재(b.1995)

Kim Jae(b.1995)
Lives and works in Seoul

Kim Jae focuses on how technological development reshapes society, culture, the environment, and everyday life. In particular, she is interested in how large-scale technologies and data-driven systems predict and optimize the future, as well as the choices, chance, and uncertainty that individuals and entities make within such systems. She explores the tension between technology’s attempt to calculate and manage the future and the nonlinear movements produced by individual beings, and examines the relations that emerge at this intersection.

Movements that cannot be reduced to logics of calculation and prediction become a key starting point of her practice. These beings are often not easily captured or are excluded within dominant systems of reality and are pushed to the margins. Rather than representing them as peripheral subjects, she reconstructs the conditions of the environments in which they are situated, while maintaining their specific contexts and narratives.

Working across video, installation, sound, and programming, she incorporates noise and unexpectedly generated forms within 3D simulation environments as key elements of her work. These elements function as variables that constitute conditions of chance and emergence. The narratives formed through the overlap of system-generated outputs and the artist’s intervention evoke situations that may exist somewhere in reality or could potentially occur. Through this, she reconsiders the present conditions shaped by technology and proposes alternative possibilities for the future.

Major activities inlclude the solo show ⟪The Possibility of Zero-Noise⟫ (2022, ABMS), group exhibition ⟪4x4 Concert⟫(2024, ARKOxOnCurating), ⟪Seeing Spring⟫ (2024, APOproject), ⟪In Sync: Re-drawing/imagining and Losing⟫ (2024, Gyocha Place 818), and ⟪Circulation of Places⟫ (2023, DDP).
